An interesting, fast paced mystery just full of humor.I would start with this book--his first in the series--because they build upon each other to a limited extent. I just finished the second in the series, which I liked even more, but I can't tell whether it was because it was better or because I was getting more used to the author's witty style. What is really surprising--although it should not have been--was that 3 reviewers (as of this writing) were taken aback by the fact that a book about a Roman Catholic priests contained religion…specifically Catholicism… Such are the times in which we live. The author intertwines information about the faith for those who are not familiar with its traditional expression and to remind the rest of us: there was some good information. Of course the author has his own take: specifically his very brief dismissal of Aquinas (something that would be shared by some in the Eastern Rite--and only very few traditional Catholics [as the author himself notes]).The only thing that bothered me was the author's disclaimer about the occult information in the book: understandably, he did not want to provide a how-to manual--and so deliberately gave inaccurate information. However, since few Catholics read about the occult, it would have been nice to know what to watch out against: and I can't imagine occultists reading this book as a how-to manual in any event. So, there was a fair amount of information that I paid no attention to because I didn't know whether or not it was accurate. The book was realistic about traditional Catholic parishes: no white wash here. More specifically, it was realistic about traditional setting prior to Benedict XVI who was bringing orthodox Catholics closer together and healing old wounds. The current Pope seems intent on reopening them with his harsh, unfair name calling directed at traditionalists in particular…but also against all orthodox Catholics--feeding into secular (and Jesuit?) stereotypes about believing Catholics. So, it appears that we are going backwards for now.

The Endless Knot is surprisingly entertaining on a variety of levels. Mystery, suspense, action, philosophy, laugh-out-loud dialogue and narrative, and characters that are real, well, characters. I will admit that I chose to read it in part because I am old enough to remember attending Mass pre-Vatican II and I wanted to see another point of view, maybe one similar to mine. While I enjoyed that aspect of the story mightily, I was also intrigued by the who-dunnit and the tapestry of people inhabiting the little piece of the world the author brings to us. The mystery is tangled and we get a bit of education along with the unraveling of it. It did have me laughing, too; I read a lot of it in my car at lunch so I could indulge. A good, clean, fun read for thinking adults. I already have the rest of the available Father Baptist books lined up in my virtual library.

I really enjoyed this book. I read for pleasure and enjoy a good story. I have read people who say in their reviews that "some editing would have made it better;" This one really hit me that some editing could have improved the flow at times. Especially at the end when the characters meet to wrap it all up. I gave it 4 stars just because of the parts that I found a bit confusing.I especially liked where it said (paraphrasing) that the early church knew that the priest and acolytes needed to be facing the altar and directing the congregation's attention to God, as the early leaders knew that if the priest were facing the congregation he would become nothing more than a game show host. I think it was truly a mistake for the Catholic Church to do away with the Latin Mass. The last time I attended a Mass with 2 others who had not been in awhile, we thought it was more of a game show than a solemn Easter Mass!I think it was unique how Father Baptist came to get his parish. There also was a lot of interesting facts in the story about Catholic history that I was not aware of. In the beginning of the book I was a bit put off by the prejudice against women and almost stopped reading. I continued on and did enjoy the story.I would recommend the book and would read another if it is a series.

This was the first novel I have read by William Biersach. When reading the writeup to decide if I wanted to order the book, I was a bit reluctant because the storyline entailed the occult which I don't care for. However, as a Catholic a mystery about a Father John Baptist was appealing. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was very entertaining and the occult nature was light, though the murders depicted were graphic. Occasionally Biersach inserts a bit of spirituality which off-sets the corruption of the diocesan hierarch. Many of the lines by the gardner, Mr. Feeney, left me laughing out loud. The mystery was solid. leaving me guessing until the end. Too, as a volunteer worker in the rectory at my church, I particularly enjoyed the relationships portrayed by the characters. They were all believable. Fr. Baptist certainly is the consummate priest. Catholics or non-Catholics will enjoy this novel.

I very much enjoyed this mystery and will be getting more books by Biersach. The characters are complex and interesting. Some have complained the story is a little slow, but for me that made it more interesting and enjoyable. After all, getting there is more than half the fun, as opposed to Dragnet style, "just the facts ma'am." If you are interested in people and things that are quirky and a bit old-timey, I think you will enjoy this serial killer story that involves modern day witchcraft and arcane symbols, and particularly the Martin Feeney character.
