San Francisco's vulgarities and corruption during the Gold Rush were an unpleasant surprise, but the Note from the Author in the back lays out the research she did for the book. This is a hopeful story about faith-filled characters working to make a difference in the midst of the degradation going on around them, and even finding love, making for a satisfying ending. This is the newest in The Daughters of the Mayflower series, and one of the main characters is challenged by the journals of her ancestors from that line.
I have enjoyed some books in this series more than others so I’m happy to report this one is great. The characters are noble and good and their story is well written. This is one of those books that is paced well and you will enjoy it from the beginning. It has less action and a heroine who is a bit milder, and perhaps more realistic, than some of the more adventurous ones found in other books in this series. Olivia is a sweet character who must put her past experiences behind her and believe in herself to move forward. She travels to San Francisco to be with her brother and is shocked by the state of the city. Readers might also be appalled at what was going on during the Gold Rush. Most references are oblique so I don’t think that will be be a problem for most readers. I had never considered the consequences of the lawlessness that pervaded that time and it was eye opening. Aside from Olivia’s journey to San Francisco, which is very brief, the entire book takes place in the city.The budding romance between Olivia and her brother’s friend Joseph is very sweet. In fact it’s so well written that it would be a great example for a young woman in finding the right qualities in a husband. There is a scene where Joseph is being considerate that brought to mind a Bible passage for Olivia on how a husband should treat his wife that is so wonderful. It’s something I would want my daughter to read when she is older.Olivia is dealing with doubt and Joseph is confronting real danger in the city. Olivia will turn to God and the Bible to resolve her struggles. Joseph will put himself at risk to save others. Eventually they will overcome their struggles. While danger is fictional the author put in some real characters from time period and a few real quotes from them as well. I have visited San Francisco a lot and never consider the names on some of its most streets so it was fun to find out who they were here. This was a great read! Olivia's parents are dead and she is left with only debt and a farm that has to be sold. A shotgun wedding to Hezekiah Brighton seems to be her only choice as he will pay off her debt and is heading to the California gold fields where her brother lives. Then Hezekiah dies on the trail, and Olivia must now finish the trip and fend for herself. When she finally finds Daniel, she also finds that she is one of the few women amongst the thousands of gold miners and the stench, unlawfulness, and immorality filling the streets of San Francisco.Olivia was one gutsy, feisty young woman. But her negativity and self-doubt as well as her lack of faith all seemed to hinder her from being all that she could be. Daniel and Joseph were both wonderful male heroes. Daniel was caring and supportive of Olivia and made sure his sister was kept safe. Joseph was a swoon worthy hero who had had a rough start in life; but once he found salvation, he became strong and caring towards his fellow man. I loved how they all support one another in their faith journey and thought the daily Bible study was a wonderful idea for this rough and tumble town.With a hint of suspense, a touch of romance, a strong cast of characters, and a well researched San Francisco setting, this was another great story in the series of the Daughters of the Mayflower. I will hate to say goodbye to the Lytton family and their descendants when this series ends.**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Books through NetGalley. San Francisco has been known for its periods of corruption. This was true during the time of the great Gold Rush, a very dark time in the city's history. The living conditions in tent communities was undisciplined and unhygienic. Prices of goods were unbridled. Human trafficking abounded, along with every manor of vice. Swindling and thievery were commonplace. This is the environment that Olivia Livingston Brighton, a young widow, found herself in as she sought her brother and his protection. Daniel Livingston, a Christian, honest businessman, and restaurateur, along with his best friend, Joseph Sawyer, also a Christian and an owner of a gold mine, worked diligently to improve conditions in their city, and to spread the truth of Christ. Olivia was welcomed into their lives and eagerly joined their efforts. Each of them were willing to sacrifice their lives in these endeavors. The Golden Bride is the latest installment in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. Readers will be happy to reflect on previous characters as Olivia is inspired by the words of her ancestors, Mary Elizabeth Chapman and Faith Lytton Weber, as she reads their journals which have been saved and passed down through generations of her family. Kimberley Woodhouse has given us another treasure to enjoy and truths to embrace within the covers of this book.
