Review
"Ashley Rhodes-Courter is triumphant in her quest to overcome insurmountable odds. I celebrate her courage to seek out the best in humanity in spite of its failings." - Victoria Rowell, New York Times bestselling author of The Women Who Raised Me: A Memoir"Nine years in the foster care system could ruin a kid. But [Ashley] not only survived, she's thrived." -Teen People"The author's ability to form intelligent, open-minded conclusions about her traumatic childhood demonstrates her remarkable control and insight, and although there are plenty of wrenching moments, she succeeds not in attracting pity but in her stated intention, of drawing attention to the children who currently share the plight that she herself overcame." --Publishers Weekly"Quiet scenes cut deepest: the author's description of her only after-school visit to a friend's home lingers heartbreakingly in one's mind. This gifted young writer's moving and eye-opening story will especially appeal to fans of Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle and David Pelzer's autobiographical books." --School Library Journal

This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is a foster parent, adoptive parent, or if you just care about and want to get a little understanding of the child welfare system. I literally read this book straight through and could not put it down! As a foster and adoptive parent myself, I've heard the trauma and abuse that children go through that gets them removed or even situations in bad foster homes. Ashley writes this book in a way that shares her story and allows you to enter into what her world was like and the trauma she experienced as a foster child and how that effected her thoughts and decisions in life. She overcame insurmountable odds in miraculous way and not only stood up for herself but also would not give up standing up for other children and bringing justice to some very bad people. The way she describes the trauma makes you want to jump through the pages and rescue her and all the kids that were effected. There are not enough people in this world fighting for the the children who have no voice in this world and Ashley is certainly a hero in my book. Once you finish this book definitely read her followup to this one, Three More Words.
Gosh, I cried. This book is so authentic and plainly told.A story about a girl who is thrust into the foster system (USA) as a little child and stays there for years. She and her little brother are sometimes together and sometimes separate, but always resiliently surviving. So much sadness and anger - all the people who SHOULD have known better, should have cared. So much GRATEFULNESS and warmth for the people who cared and made all the difference.I had to read this book in advance of a foster care mentorship at college. I'm not returning it.
Wow. This book is thoughtful and powerful. Sometimes I cried, other times I cheered, and other times I was enraged. Ashley does not hold back and names names when she can. Some of this book is hard to read, and that's the point. Children in foster care can have a wonderful life, but unfortunately there are some adults that scam the system and abuse children while getting a government check. Ashley's struggles show the need for change, and the need for caring, loving foster homes and per-adoptive homes. Ashley shows a lot of courage in telling her own personal story, as she received some backlash for speaking about what happened to her. When you finish this book, don't stop at the end - "Three More Words" explores her young adult years and how her childhood impacted choices she made throughout her life. And it also explores how a child with so much chaos growing up can become a loving and nurturing parent to her own children.
What a fantastic book! I read it in two settings, eager to get to the end. Then found I had a billion and one questions. I have since read her second book which answered most of them. This story is gripping, and hard (mentally) to read. Must have been a million times harder to live. I knew our Foster Care System was broken, but this sheds a spotlight on some very serious issues. I must admit that several (dozen) times when reading the book the word BRAT entered my mind. But then when I read the author was only 17 when she finished the first draft it explained it all. Don't get me wrong, I can totally feel compassion for her situation and how she handled it, but her need for everything to be ''perfect'' was a little annoying. But that is soooo a teenager! Makes perfect sense.I loved this book. It was well written, easy to read, and thoroughly captured my attention. I quickly ordered the second book and it does not disappoint either. I see others saying this first one is better, or the second one is better, but I think they are both fantastic. They are written a bit differently but Ashley has grown up, both mentally and physically, and it really shows.Kudos to her for continuing to be an advocate for children who really have no one to speak for them. The courage Ashley and her husband have shown is amazing. And a big HATS OFF to Gay & Phil Courter who had the guts, the courage, and the endless supply of love needed to take on Ashley.
I'm a foster mom and I see all these things that the kids go through in the system. It makes you open your eyes to what they have to go through. I struggle a lot with seeing if I am doing enough for my kids but after reading Ashley book I know I am doing enough. I love how she takes the bad rep out of adopting a teenager. I used to work at children home society as a supervisor with 10 teens and I meant over 300 kids. Even the ones who were labeled "troubled" still had a huge heart and just needed someone to care about them. If you have a home and a big heart look into foster care after my years of doing it all the kids need is a safe and loving family even if they are only with you a short time they will remember you.
