I purchased this book for my trainer, who is currently revamping the jumping course at the equestrian center where we board our horses, while also training her new Thoroughbred mare. My trainer is very pleased with the book which not only provides information on excellent course designs but also the 'nuts and bolts' behind course building. Superb illustrations abound along with full-color images of courses -- this book is filled with all the details one needs to design a great and challenging course from basic courses up through the professional designs, and is recommended by the highly esteemed George Morris.The book is hardcover and has spiral binding, so lies flat when open on the table. I recommend the volume be kept in a protective plastic bag, if left in dusty tack rooms!Well worth the investment -- this book will be a permanent fixture at the stables.
I've been riding for 20 years and done plenty of showing, setting up jumps etc. but there was plenty of things in here that I didn't know. She also has many pages of course diagrams (I have a jumper course set up in my arena right now!). She also has gymnastic courses based on de Nemethy's designs. If you like Linda Allen's 101 Jumping Exercises, you'll find this book useful too!
This is such a cool book for anyone who jumps. I learned so much about how courses create questions for riders and horses, how to set distances, how to walk distances, etc. great book and wish I'd bought it years ago.
This is an excellent book, but it tells far more than what the description would imply.This book goes into details about what colors of jumps and poles are traditional, what is and is not legal at recognized shows, and the safety of each design.In the section on oxers, the book discusses arrowheads, fan oxers, and several other styles. It compared and contrasted them regarding how easy the design is for different horses to jump, and where the (average) horse would need to take off and land to clear the oxer, with the bascule pencilled in over the jump.The explanations in this book were very, very clear, going even so far as to tell one how to measure distances between jumps and how to make sure that two related jumps are "square" when setting a course.In the back, there is a section that has courses drawn out for you so that you can set them up on your own. These are courses for equitation, hunter, and jumper. All of the courses are good with varying degrees of difficulty.I loved the section where they covered how to set up a practice jumping ring at home on a tight budget...where to skimp, and where to splurge.This reads like a text book, though, so not an entertaining afternoon read.

Love the book. A must have for the do-it-yourself jumper training programs such as mine. Easy to follow and gave me lots of ideas to use and expand upon.
If you work with Hunters and Jumpers as a rider, trainer, or course designer...this book is a must-read. Learn how to set up jumps correctly and safely. Learn the logic and design of jump courses. The book is filled with many photos, diagrams and descriptions. It is worth the cost.
