Review

"With characteristic winsomeness and clarity, Nelson covers a wide range of topics from poverty to jobs and justice to entrepreneurship, providing a highly readable overview of biblically informed economic life. This pastor has taken the time to learn about the capacity that makes genuine compassion possible. Implicit in the book is a much-needed correction to the church: we've far too long avoided the work of thinking well about economics, as though somehow that sphere is detached from our spiritual life. Nelson shows us the Bible talks about economics through and through―it's just that too many pastors haven't been paying sufficient attention. Nelson has given us an accessible introductory textbook for understanding what makes for flourishing people and communities." (Amy L. Sherman, author, Kingdom Calling: Vocational Stewardship for the Common Good)"For several years I have watched this book being born, growing out of Tom Nelson's remarkable work as a pastor in Kansas City, and increasingly as a teacher to the wider world. The Economics of Neighborly Love makes this simple argument: the everyday world is an economic world, and there are implications for who we are and how we live. Drawing on years of pastoral experience with people at work in the world, social analysis from across the political spectrum, relationships with good people doing good work in cities all over America, and most profoundly a commitment to biblical and theological reflection, this is a book for everyone who cares about the moral meaning of the marketplace." (Steven Garber, author of Visions of Vocation, and principal of the Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation & Culture)

I was fortunate enough to hear Tom Nelson speak about faith, work, and economics at a Pastor's conference recently and I ordered this book as a follow up to that. It did not disappoint.

I found this book thought provoking. I believe it directs is to integrate our faith into the world around us. It is only a starting point in understanding economics.

Great resource for developing an understanding of economics and how it integrates into the everyday Christian life and the ministry of the church.

I love this book. It has made me more aware of how I can help my neighbors.

The first time I heard Tom Nelson speak on the topic of economics, I was skeptical. I’m all for connecting faith and work, but is there really an intersection between faith and economics? After reading this book, my skepticism has vanished. I believe every person of faith should read this and consider its ideas. It stretches our thinking about the importance of both our compassion and our capacity, challenges us to see our daily work as the primary way we are loving our neighbor, and helps to understand how our work fits into the community around us. I highly recommend it!

Tom Nelson has once again delivered a compelling volume filled with thoughtful insight, tender stories, and practical next-steps. Over the last few years, I have heard increased talk about economics in the faith & work world. I was often confused, wondering whether this amounted to worshipping at the altar of capitalistic consumerism. I knew economics was important, but failed to realize how central fruitful productivity is in the biblical story. Nelson’s contribution laid my fears to rest, expanded my understanding of basic economic concepts, and made connections between economics and compassionate love that I had never seen before. Nelson’s emphasis on the need for both compassion and capacity was so enlightening, providing a framework with which to think about economic realities of value and exchange. If you read one book this year, make it this one!

I'm grateful for this new book by Tom Nelson (I had a chance to read a pre-release copy). I have been helped by his previous book, Work Matters, and this book carries on in the same tradition. As he did in Work Matter, Nelson begins with a personal story-- he recounts his childhood growing up in a home with a single mother and several siblings, experiencing great financial strain. This personal narrative launches a critical question--how are economics tied to loving our neighbor? Stated another way, work matters, but do economics matter too? I highly recommend this resource for pastors and thoughtful congregants who want to think theologically and practically about how cultivating capacity is necessarily related to Jesus' call to love our neighbor.

At first glance, it seems quite strange to see “economics” and “neighborly love” in the same sentence. However, my colleague and brother, Dr. Nelson thoughtfully and simply explains why they go together like peanut butter and jam. In fact, with great humility and winsomeness, Nelson illustrates how having Biblically grounded economic wisdom greatly helps us to live out concretely, the Greatest Commandment, to love our neighbor as ourselves. If you are new to the faith, work and economics space, this book is accessible; if you are a veteran in the faith, work and economics space, this book is accessible. Expect to be challenged and encouraged as Nelson makes the practice of economic wisdom quite accessible. -- Luke Bobo (ProfessorLB)
