Kristina is a typical preteen - doesn't fit in at he school, but has a heart of gold. One day, a mysterious gift from one of her teachers whisks her and her pet rat Raymond to a magical realm known as Bernovem, where she learns she is the "chosen one" - destined to bring the mystical bauble known as The Warble to its resting place and ending the reign of the wicked Queen Sentiz. For a preteen reading this book, the story is jam-packed with adventure, humor, heroes and villains, which is really all you need. It is well-written and easy to follow. There are also many twists and turns that I did not see coming. The friendship that forms between Kristina and Prince Werrian is also very cute and sweet. It was a very enjoyable read, and I would recommend it to kids of middle school age.
My child is still in the process of reading this book to me for school book reports. At points, she's found herself engaged in the disheartening encounters Kristina has with 2 school arch-rivals (Davina and Hester) plus the heckling peers surrounding them who find entertainment in her mishaps. Bullies. Isolation. Uncertainty. It's all of what my child expresses during her reads about Kristina that she can relate to.It's a bit of slow start that leads into the adventure awaiting Kristina in another world connected by the warble. But the plot building up to that other world is full of character depictions that reflect our reality that is too familiar on playgrounds and among young former friendships gone wrong. Without giving spoilers - as I've read further than my daughter has been currently reading - Kristina's arrival into another world of Bernovem develops into purpose that changes her perspective. In addition to Chronicles of Narnia, this book can be compared to Wizard of Oz and in some ways, for my child, stories centered around Tinker Bell. That fact that we're not fans of magic doesn't prevent us from seeing the message in Kristina's journey discovering her mission of returning the warble to its rightful place in the land of Barnovem and discovering herself to be more than the outcast whom her peers regard her as being. Even at the center of the book, there is a wonderful contrast of 2 worlds - the trivial behind her until she returns to it and her purpose which her new friends (Rumalock and faries) depend on her to fulfill. Kristinas newfound significance as a person, though met by her confusion at first, is refreshing when introduced in a book of prophecy that captures moments of life before they happen.Read it for the sweet messages and character-defining purpose in the story.
The plight of Kristina Kingsly touched my heart in the first few pages of the book. I was that girl everyone on the bus taunted and made fun of. Kristina's reactions were so typical of kids who are being bullied: She tried her best to stand up to the criticism and not appear hurt by it.What Kristina didn't know that fateful day on the bus was that an unexpected Christmas gift from her teacher would change her life forever. That very same night Kristina is transported to another dimension called Bernovem where she learns her arrival was part of an ancient prophecy. She is the chosen child who will restore peace to the land and reinstate the rightful monarchs.Kristina will meet many friends and foes in her journey to replace the magical orb to its rightful place at the top of the mountain. Kristina isn't the only one who magically appears in Bernovem. Anyone or anything that touched the box containing the Warble suddenly appears in Bernnovem too.Victoria Simcox has spun a delightful tale of friendship, compassion, courage, and determination. The characters represent the good and evil children face each day in a tale that will engage even the most reluctant reader. Kids will see in Hester Crumfield, Graham Kepler, and Davina Pavey why it's important to try to be more like Kristina. This is a great read and a copy should be in every school library.
It was a host of fantasy adventure novels that slowly brought me into the world of books when I was a boy. Now an adult, I consider the genre to be perfect for coaxing youngsters into the habit of reading. The way I see it, if reading is a habit, then books are opium. The author of The Warble has produced a pretty addicting work of literature. I picked this book up for a change of pace and was reminded of those stories from my youth. Kristina is a young, pre-adolescent girl struggling to cope with bullies at her school, her quiet, bookish demeanor only serving to make her an easier target for them. A mysterious gift from one of her teachers, far from easing her troubles, only serves to fling her (head-first) into an adventure in a parallel world.Upon arriving in Bernovem, Kristina gets caught up in the local “politicsâ€, and it soon becomes clear that her fate is inextricably linked to the “warbleâ€, an extraordinary bauble-like object originally contained within her gift.Cut off from her world and vulnerable, Kristina is quickly befriended by many of the world’s inhabitants, a diverse coalition of colorful characters with a common desire to break the strength of the sadistic Queen Sentiz.I should add that (considering that it’s an independently published work), The Warble was satisfyingly free of grammatical errors, a fact that allowed me to enjoy the book at its fullest potential. This is particularly important for a parent wishing to hand it over to a child.
